Dip Mix Ornaments Make A Unique Holiday Gift and Treat

A while ago I was doing some “holiday prep” thinking and realized we’d be doing a fair amount of visiting over the holidays.  As I was writing my list of special friends and co-workers who I wanted to remember with a little gift, I wanted to find create something a little special, a little different, but nevertheless, a little “me.”

After I stumbled upon these cute little ornaments, I realized this was the ticket!

Dip Mix Ornaments are hollow, plastic ornaments that contain a mix of yummy ingredients a hostess (or you!) can use to make a quick dip for friends and family. Of course, you can add other ingredients, too... Read on, or just use your own creativity!

Dip-mix ornaments are exactly what they sound like:  small, hollow plastic ornaments filled with savory ingredients that are mixed with either yogurt, mayo or sour cream (recipes below) that produce a flavorful addition to a hostess’ table.

I purchased a set of 12 plastic ornaments* (these heart-shaped ones were so cute!), and after going through my spice cabinet, also bought a few fresh jars (it was a terrific and much-needed “excuse” to cull, clean-out and spruce-up my spice rack).  My 10-yr-old daughter and I then spent a quiet, comfortable afternoon side by side mixing ingredients and filling up the little containers with our concoction, listening to Christmas music.  That evening I typed up and printed out the recipes, and attached them to the ornaments with colorful ribbon (and you can use twine or raffia or whatever you have on hand…) the next day.

Some tips I picked up as we went along:

  • Read each recipe in advance and scrutinize your ingredients – make sure you have them all and, just as importantly, that everything’s fresh!
  • Create one recipe at a time – it’s super easy to get recipes and ingredients mixed up, so make it easy on yourself by working methodically…
  • Work over a small bowl – even using a funnel (which is strongly recommended!), you’ll spill some. (Note: I have a set of silicone funnels I love, but for this project, plastic or metal are better. The herbs tended to stick to my silicone one. However, the bowl will catch it, not only making it easier for you to scoop your ingredients up again to fit it all in, but also to clean up afterward.

* The packaging on the ornaments I used did not say whether or not they were food safe.  I washed and dried them thoroughly, but if that is a concern, you may want to specifically check for “food safe” on the package.

It took us about 2 afternoons to have over a dozen of these made up.

Quick hostess-gift idea: We stenciled white lunch bags with colorful Christmas stamps, and then I included one or 2 of these ornaments with a jar of peppermint body butter: something for her to share, and something for herself!

This is what mine looked like.
Not a great picture, but you get the idea 😉

Dip Mix Ornament Recipes

These are the 3 recipes I used, but a quick Google search will definitely turn up an easy recipe of your own favorite mix. After you mixing the ingredients together, pour them into the ornaments.  On the card, you only need to print the additional ingredients and the directions.  You can see part of the cards I did in the graphic above.

If none of these tickle your fancy…head on over to SprinkleSomeFun, where you can find Hot Cocoa Mix ornaments, Gingerbread M&M ornaments and Flavored Milk Mix ornaments.  And I promise you, you’re gonna LOVE her site :-)!

Just think ~ you’ll have the yummiest tree on the block!

Enjoy preparing for the Holidays! Do you have any fun-and-yummy Christmas gift ideas to share? We’d love to hear from you in the comments 🙂
