Coffee and Conversation #134 –
Possibilities with Praxis

Good morning and welcome to Coffee and Conversation #134!

Praxis is a great college alternative to college for homeschoolers. Those with an entrepreneurial mindset will especially appreciate the apprenticeship-type format. And who would ever object to starting off a career without being saddled with exorbitant debt? There are many reasons to at least consider this program…

Do you ever wonder if college is really necessary anymore?

I don’t think it’s news to anyone over 30 that it’s certainly a different world today than it ever has been.

When I was in sight of graduation (back in the dark ages), and even when our two oldest kids were Junior and Seniors in high school (almost a decade ago), college was a “given.” Tech school was for kids who couldn’t “cut it” (I’m not trying to be mean, that’s just what the perspective was, at least for the people I knew), there was no such thing as a “gap year”, and even homeschooling was just…well, it was just not “done.”

Life – our culture and our society – is certainly different these days.

And in that light, I’ve recently discovered a new program that our family is considering as our two teens face graduation in the next two years. Praxis is a program that allows graduating high school seniors to fast-forward into a career by working in a paid apprenticeship program in lieu of enrolling in college. It’s a modern-day apprenticeship, enabling bright, practical-minded and forward-thinking young adults to get started in a career they’ll love!

Plus, let’s take a real look at some of the real issues with college, shall we? Ryan will both entertain and inform…

I think he makes quite a few valid points, don’t you?

First Step to Get Your Heart RightFirst Step to Get Your Heart Right

From Beth at Messy Marriage

The continual mending of my messy marriage can be traced back to one foundational shift in my life that created a cascade of other important and healing choices. Ultimately this had everything to do with my heart in relation to God.
So with that in mind, I’m going to begin a new series that will unpack the spiritual and relational steps I’ve taken over the years that have consistently encouraged me in life and marriage.

8 Common Product Launch Mistakes8 Common Product Launch Mistakes

From Jennie at Little Girl Designs

Today is confession day. I’m going to get real here and talk about 8 common product launch mistakes. And since I’m writing about this, I’ll be honest and say the only reason I know about these mistakes is because I have committed every single one of them. So, if you see yourself in this list, don’t worry, it’s not the end of the world. We can all learn from each other, right?

Honestly, if you’ve ever launched a product, I’m sure you’ve faced some of these issues. I’m sure most of us struggle with these but since we feel like we’re the only ones going through them, we don’t share. But before I dive in, let me share a bit of my story as a blogger.

Background is always helpful when you’re talking about mistakes made in the journey.

How to Cater to Your Child's Learning StyleHow to Cater to Your Child’s Learning Style

From Amanda at Sicily’s Heart and Home

Planning activities for your child isn’t enough for really learning the material. You have to consider interests, developmental level, readiness, and most importantly children’s learning styles.

I’m always preaching to follow a child’s interest when planning themes and activities. When we plan around a child’s interests we know that they will become more engaged and develop a deeper meaning to their learning.

50 Ways to Relieve Heartburn Without Medication50 Ways to Relieve Heartburn Without Medication

From Lisa at Feathers inTheWoods

Heartburn is something that most of us will experience at least once in awhile. It’s that uncomfortable burning sensation right in the middle of the chest that’s caused when acid from your stomach goes back up your esophagus. If that’s not bad enough, it’s even worse when your throat starts to burn and you can almost taste the acid. Yuck! Unfortunately, my husband gets it a lot! He’s tried everything over the years. Antacids, different prescriptions, changing his diet, etc. etc. Some help for awhile, but they all end up failing eventually. It’s been getting worse over the last 4 or 5 years so we’ve turned to natural cures to help.

Thank you all so much for your inspiration and timely words…

My one son went to trade school and the other got a degree. I really think they each wish they had done a trade. I personally have been very upset by the change in my oldest son being influenced by liberal college professors. I don’t recommend it at all.

With our crowd, we’re looking at college in terms of what career the individual student is aiming for. Boy #1 wanted to be a welder, so he didn’t need 4 years, but 2 years helped him to start out strong. Boy #2 needs at least 4 years for the medical field he is pursuing. Boy #3 is looking at biggest brother and following that path. Who knows where #4 will want to land, but we’ve not made college the main thing, but rather a means to the desired end.

LOVE that, Michele! What a great example of moving forward according to their strengths and interests! Wish we’d started homeschooling in that mindset, as I think our oldest was actually hampered a bit by college (except that he met his wife there, so it wasn’t all lost – lol).

Thanks for sharing your experience – so encouraging!!
