Coffee and Conversation Link Party #69 – Preparing for The Holidays

Good Morning and welcome to Coffee and Conversation #69 – hosted by Pat And Candy.com!

Coffee & Conversation with Pat and Candy!

Happy Wednesday to you all, and happy day-before-Thanksgiving to our US friends! As you’re reading this, I’m most likely cleaning the carpet in my husband’s office. Yes, I’m doing this the day before turkey day because we had a MAJOR leak in that room, which apparently we didn’t know about for quite. some. time (enough for me to be cleaning mold and mildew off stuff…), and which we discovered on Friday while on the way out for the weekend. Luckily, my husband was able to scout out the parts he needed while (trying to be productive) at work on Monday, and he had us all good-to-go late that night.

But there was still the clean-up issue… {{sigh}}

No, to be totally transparent here, I did NOT handle this well on Sunday, or Monday, and I was finally getting only a little better just yesterday.  Nope, nope…leave me with NO water to the house, having to go a block to use “the facilities” at my sweet mother-in-law’s house, navigating a HUGE stinkin’ mess in the living room just a few days before the kids are coming down, with their spouses, for the weekend, unable to clean the kitchen, which was starting to smell…and I was not exactly a happy camper.

My sweet, sweet kids, tho…my 14-year-old son hugged me while I had a meltdown, my 11-year-old daughter was by my side helping and encouraging me as I started to “dig in” to the clean up…

They put the “thanks” back into “Thanksgiving” for me…

Which makes me think about the holidays in general.  While I see lots of Christmas cheer (and sales) in the stores these days, it occurs to me that first-and-foremost, our hearts need to be ready.  No amount of presents under the tree will impact our lives the way appreciating the true gift of the season will.  I know my heart often has a long way to go…  How’s yours?

Not surprisingly, then, our features this week deal with getting ready to get ready for Christmas…

Improve Your Prayer Life

So thankful that Mel over at EssentialThings Devotions is sharing with us again.  Her honesty about her own struggles and what the Lord has been showing her will undoubtedly reveal a nugget or two you can use to prepare your own heart for the season…

Exploring the Practical Side of Prayer

Also dealing with prayer, I LOVE how Kathryn gets real in this post… She takes prayer out of the heady and theoretical into “real” life…

Are You Cultivating Compassion in a Selfish World?

Really, is there a parent in the world you has never worried about this at Christmas, or is it only me?  Wonderful, wonderful story (scroll down) and terrific Bible verses to keep in mind, and talk about with your kids all year long – but Christmas is a great time to get started in case you’re just starting the convo…

Thank you for your inspiration, ladies!

Please feel free to grab a button to brag about it display on your site! 😉

Andrew, thank you so much for those words of blessing and encouragement! I’m thankful, too, for the effort you put into communicating some difficult and challenging (to say the least) life experiences.
We can all learn so much from each other when we share AND listen!

      Enjoy your Thanksgiving weekend!

I’m so sorry to hear about your leak just before Thanksgiving, Pat. I told my husband yesterday to show lots of love and grace toward me in the next couple of days–so that whenever he sees me having a meltdown or saying something snippy, that’s his cue to “love, love, love me!” ha! I think he got the message, but even if he doesn’t show “love in action” toward me, I will try my best to lean into God’s strong embrace. I hope you are able to do the same, my friend. Praying you find comfort, strength and joy this Thanksgiving and thanks for the great linkup!

    • Pat November 25, 2015 at 3:52 pm #

Ah, yes, Beth…so important to lean on HIM during tough times. Actually, I felt so silly having my melt-down, but it just seemed to be the “last straw”… Oh well, welcome to the human race, right?
I do have so much to be thankful for, and I’m happy to be over myself and my first-world problem.
No matter what happens…I hold on to “God is good – all the time!”

      Happy Thanksgiving, friend 🙂 !

I am sooo sorry for the chaos you are finding in the midst of preparing for your family to come. Thanksgiving, Yep, those kids do help us put that thanks back into it, especially when we lose it. I remember thinking something much like this when my refrigerator decided to stop working and I am positive I threw a temper tantrum as I was cleaning it. Not the best example for my kids but they chose to cheer me on, hug me like yours and my ever dependable servant-hearted young man choose to be my helper even though I may have been crying while I was cleaning. I don’t remember…but it may have happened. 🙂

Praying for a dose of humor to find its way into the busy preparing for you, I know I could always use that when I get busy and for grace to be your constant companion.
Thanks for hosting a place to share.

    • Pat November 25, 2015 at 4:06 pm #

Ohmygosh…I can picture myself EXACTLY the same way… Gah – why do first-world problems throw us for such a loop?
Well, I think I’ve gotten my sense of humor back. So glad my kids are who they are…don’t know what I’d do without ’em.

Anyway…holding on to grace and gratitude this Thanksgiving season.
Thanks so much for stopping by, and for your kind words!

      Happy Thanksgiving 🙂

Good luck cleaning – many hands make light work, and it sounds like you got some good kids. 🙂 Thanks for hosting!

    • Pat November 25, 2015 at 3:57 pm #

I do, CJ…and I’ve (finally) come around to being thankful, even for the yucky stuff…
Hope your Thanksgiving is just wonderful – looking forward to trying out your recipe for tahini 🙂
