Book Review – “And The Word Became Flesh”

WordBecameFleshCoverI can’t tell you how many times I’ve started a “read the Bible in a year” program, and gotten “this far”… It’s SO discouraging to have a whole year’s plan in front of you and not get anywhere with it.  {sigh}

So I have to admit that part of the attraction of Kathy Gossen’s devotional And The Word…  was the fact that it was only 90 days.  Follow-through and consistency are two concepts that I struggle with from time-to-time, so I figured that I could at least give this a try!  90-days was not too long, and not too short; it seemed “just. right.”  Feature 1: a plus.

Upon receiving this book, one of the first things I liked, shallow as it seems, was the cover.  In order to give it my best shot, I’d taken the liberty to print out the entire book and put it in a binder.  In black-and-white, with a simple, graphic-less cover, it was easy and inexpensive to copy.  Feature 2: a plus.

I don’t usually read the Introduction, but being that this was a Bible reading plan, I thought it might be a good idea.  I was glad I did, because it displayed the welcome flexibility of this program.  She suggests this book as an accompaniment to your quiet times, along with journaling, but all these things are optional.  The additional memory verses (which are a great concept, but I might have chosen other ones in some places), journaling, reflection questions, and prayer guides all provide fodder for digging deeper into The Word, without  making you feel obligated to use any and/or all of them… Feature 3: a plus.

So, review copy all printed out and put nicely into a thin binder, I followed the plan for a few days.  May I say I absolutely love it?  Simple enough to be able to get started after only a cup of coffee in the morning, this adjunct to my morning quiet time provided me with a non-overwhelming reading plan, with just enough interesting background and prayer points to get my mornings going…and keep me coming back each day 🙂  Feature 4-ish: a plus!

Moms, I know you’re busy – whether you’re working in or out of the home!  Try Kathy Gossen’s “And the Word Became Flesh”, and get started on a regular routine of starting your day in The Word…  No more excuses!
